"Back In" by Fraser Speirs
In the piece “Back In,” Fraser Speirs talked about why he has decided to develop for the iPhone OS once again. In September of 2008, Speirs wrote, “I will never write another iPhone application for the App Store as currently constituted” in a piece entitled “App Store: I’m Out.” Speirs made some great points in his writing and the piece circulated on the Internet like wild fire. This time around, he also made some insightful points, one of which I simply could not agree with more:
Having seen the reaction to the iPad from actual potential users, the secure future of the Mac OS as a general consumer computing platform is no longer as clear to me as it once was.
One of the main reasons why the iPhones and iPod touches have been such great success is due to the power of the App Store. Apps can be downloaded and used instantly and unobtrusively. The App Store provides endless possibilities for iPhone and iPod touch owners. Simply put, the apps transform the machines.
The iPad has only been out for about a month. Apps will continue to mature for the iPad just as they did for the iPhone and iPod touches. The App Store, in so many different ways (apps), will greatly change the ways users interact with softwares and contents.
I am glad to see Spiers back in the game. I am certain that consumers will benefit greatly from the addition of a very talented developer.
Welcome back, Fraser.
